Cultivating critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and rigour

Green STEM at Edmonton Catholic Schools cultivates critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and rigour while instilling lifelong care for God’s creation. Through the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, students engage in meaningful learning that connects faith, innovation, and environmental responsibility.

Rooted in Catholic teaching and inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, Green STEM develops students’ understanding of their role as stewards of the Earth. Students and staff grow in global awareness and social responsibility while developing the skills needed to address real-world challenges.

What is Green STEM?

Green STEM brings together science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through an environmental and faith-centred lens. Learning is intentional, interdisciplinary, and connected to real-world issues, helping students see how these disciplines work together in everyday life and future careers.

What Students Experience:

Through Green STEM, students:

  • build higher-level and critical thinking skills
  • engage in integrative, cross-curricular learning
  • explore real-world environmental challenges
  • develop as global leaders and environmental stewards
  • prepare for a complex and interconnected world of work
  • participate in engaging, experiential, and meaningful learning opportunities

Faith in Action

Green STEM reflects our commitment to Living our Faith by encouraging students to care for creation and serve others. Guided by the teachings of the Catholic Church, students deepen their understanding of stewardship, justice, and responsibility for the world around them.

Preparing students for the future

By integrating STEM disciplines through an environmental focus, Green STEM prepares students to think critically, solve problems, and collaborate effectively. Students develop the knowledge and skills to contribute to their communities as engaged, responsible members of the Catholic community.

Green STEM learning supports Learning Excellence, Organizational Excellence, and Embracing Diversity by creating inclusive, innovative environments where all learners can succeed and see themselves as part of a hopeful future.

Instilling Care for God's Creation & a Lifelong Love of Science

In the Green STEM program (STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), the students and staff at our Catholic Elementary Schools focus on caring for God's creation and following the words of Pope Frances in his encyclical "Laudato Si".  Everyone learns about taking care of our environment as well as improving higher level thinking skills with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

  • STEM is engaging, experiential, meaningful and fun.  It provides a student-centered learning environment.
  • STEM focuses on real-life issues and problems.
  • STEM students are future scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians.
  • Students are global leaders and environmental stewards caring for God's creation.
